Overview
Black Desert Resort in the arid desert of southern Utah, surrounded by horizons of red rock mountains, was the last golf course Tom Weiskopf was involved in building (he was diagnosed with cancer as construction was beginning). Opened in 2023, the public course is a stunning juxtaposition of wavy fairways chiseled out of fields of black lava rock that had to be blasted into golf formations. Phil Smith, Weiskopf’s longtime design partner, completed the visually arresting design that will host the PGA Tour’s new Black Desert Championship in the fall of 2024, and another LPGA event the following year. Black Desert Resort is located outside the golf-rich area of St. George, Utah. The PGA Tour will host a new event at Black Desert in 2024, marking the first PGA Tour event in Utah in more than 60 years.

“Beautiful surrounding area with great views Really challenging to play - difficult layout, blind shots, and very unforgiving. A fun experience, but I’d be curious how many people come back because of the difficulty of the golf course."

“I have to admit to being really pleasantly surprised by Black Desert, which is like no other Weiskopf design I have played. The setting is spectacular, of course, but the golf is fun! There are many half-par type holes, including some real risk-reward par fives and two fun drivable par fours. The greens are interesting and fun, and the black lava setting is really pretty unique. What a great crowning achievement for Weiskopf's design career."

“Good contrast with lava rock throughout property, with red sand cliffs in the distance, and white sandy bunkers. Solid test with some blind tee shots. A good challenging layout."

“Hard to focus on golf with some many amazing things to look at. Black Desert is like playing golf in one of Utah's famous national parks. The entrance to Snow Canyon is visible from nearly every hole and as you make your way back to the clubhouse on the back 9 it's as if you're hitting right into the mouth of the canyon. While appearing very tight on some tees, the course is actually much more open and forgiving than you would expect for a course sitting on top of a lava field. The greens are superb and quick. On top of the great golf, the service at Black Desert is as warm and friendly as you'll ever encounter at a high end daily fee course. It's all-inclusive golf at it's finest. So go ahead and splurge. Your round at Black Desert will give you memories to last a lifetime."

“Expensive , but wonderful. Sight lines from several tees makes some tee shots difficult. Love the green complexes and condition is top notch."

“Remarkable views from every hole. Fairways fast and firm, greens rolled true. Hospitality was first class. You are challenged on every shot to look at the options and pick a safe route of take on the risk reward shot."

“Like Pebble Beach. You must play it at least once. Can not beat the scenery. Tee length varies making it enjoyable for all players. Expensive but eye opening in the ability to even build it."
