Golfer posts unbelievable video of Asheville golf course underwater following Hurricane Helene

    October 01, 2024

Golf is the furthest thing from people’s minds in western North Carolina right now. This weekend, Hurricane Helene cut a devasting path across the region as water rushed down nearby mountains and over the banks of the Swannanoa River, submerging the quaint tourist town in a torrent of water, mud and debris. Homes were washed away, roads vanished and dozens of lives (and counting) were lost in Buncombe County alone. The destruction was almost unfathomable.

The process of rebuilding Asheville and many other towns like it across the American southeast will be long and arduous. Golf will take backseat for months, perhaps years. For those of us who stare longingly from the highway every time they pass a golf course, however, one local golfer’s video of Broadmoor Golf Links, a top public course in the Asheville area, struck a poignant chord. Take a look.

Here’s what Broadmoor looked like as of April 2024.

Golf’s place is this tragedy is purely anecdotal, but this video highlights the scope of the devastation—and the size of the recovery—that western North Carolina now faces. Our sport's time in that healing process will come, and for many its return will be a welcome respite, but for now our thoughts are with all those affected by Hurricane Helene across the southern United States.
