nice double!
‘That is the stupidest’: Peter Malnati holes out from 180 yards for … double bogey(!)
Peter Malnati said it himself: “Golf sucks so bad. “That is the stupidest … nice double.”
The 37-year-old, two-time PGA Tour winner was early in his opening round at the Black Desert Championship in Utah. He had just made birdie on the third hole then was butchering the par-4, 477-yard fourth hole. By butchering, we mean he blew his first tee shot way right. Penalty. Blew his second tee shot way left. Penalty.
Thankfully for Malnati he found the middle of the fairway with his third tee shot, which counted as his fifth on the hole. Then, from 177 yards out, he hit his approach a little short, right of the green, the yellow ball checked up, caught the slope and rolled left and into the bottom of the cup. Double-bogey 6!
The graphic on the screen made it seem like Malnati had holed his second shot for an eagle, but hearing his aforementioned reaction, and looking at the tour’s ShotLink computers showed that it was nothing close to an eagle. Rather, it was a mighty lucky double bogey.
Malnati has been on the struggle bus lately, missing five cuts in his last seven events. His two made cuts during that stretch were a 65th place and a 59th place tie at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, a no-cut, 70-player field. He shot 68-76 last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship and is 69th on the FedEx Cup fall standings, thanks to a victory earlier in the season at the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook.
